Five Country Songs That Hit Home During Every Stage Of A Breakup

By Deidre Heid

There’s something about music that moves the soul, whether it triggers just a few tears or even causes a major meltdown. I’ve spent countless nights singing Adele at the top of my lungs because her lyrics just speak to me. And it’s somehow therapeutic to belt out words that relate to you.

After Adele, the country genre in general is best at portraying exactly how I’m feeling through relatable lyrics. After personally experiencing the following five stages of a breakup, I’ve discovered the best songs to listen to during each one. (Go ahead and bookmark this page if you aren’t going through any of these scenarios right now. You might need these songs later!)

Scenario 1: You Start To Realize Things Are Going Downhill Fast

Song: Make Every Word Hurt

By: Lori McKenna

The lyrics that speak to me: So whatever you do/ For whatever it’s worth/ If you’re gonna tear my world apart/ Then I’d prefer/ Don’t leave me confused/ Don’t let the lines blur/ If your’e gonna tell me you don’t love me anymore/ Make every word hurt

Scenario 2: The Few Days Following The Breakup When You’re Slightly In Denial

Song: Bring You Back

By: Brett Eldridge

The lyrics that speak to me: In a second my world changed/ So fast that my heart was breaking/ I wrapped my arms around you/ And I just kept saying your name/ I put your hands in my hands/ And we dropped to the floor both crying/ At the moment that your heart gave up on us/ I told you/ I’ll bring you back/ I’ll bring you back/ I’ll bring you back to love

Scenario 3: Two Weeks Post Breakup When You Aren’t Even Close To Being Over Him

Song: Unlove You

By: Jennifer Nettles

The lyrics that speak to me: And I can’t unlove you/ My heart can’t unbreak/ I can’t unfeel how it felt/ But feel so much myself/ My whole body ached/ And I can’t unknow this/ Lord I wish I knew how/ But I can’t unlove you/ So come love me for now

Scenario 4: A Couple Months Later When You’re Still Broken Up But Start Drunk Texting (Which Leads To Making Out)

Song: Mayday

By: Cam

The lyrics that speak to me: I said I’m moving on/ Cause things were getting rough/ But here I am in your bed/ I strung it on too long/ Afraid to be alone/ Now we’re in over our heads/ It’s either sink or swim/ We’ve tried so many times/ For worse or for better/ It tears my heart in two to leave it all behind/ And say goodbye forever

Scenario 5: When You Finally Realize He’s Not The One, But It Still Stings To Think About Him

Song: Better Man

By: Little Big Town

The lyric that speaks to me: Sometimes in the middle of the night/ I can feel you again/ But I just miss you/ And I just wish you were a better man/ And I know why we had to say goodbye like the back of my hand/ And I just miss you/ And I just wish you were a better man

So there you have it. The musical therapy you need for every stage of a breakup. If you go back and forth between scenarios 4 and 5, it’s okay. I do too. We’re human.

Keep singing at the top of your lungs.
