There’s something about the reverse cam that literally transformed this generation, making it impossible not to document ourselves when we find just the right light, have a great makeup day, or stumble upon the perfect backdrop but have no one to take the photo.
It’s become so normal to see girls standing still in the middle of a crowded mall or street with their arm extended, making faces at their iPhone. There’s so much pressure to post perfect photos that it’s not uncommon for someone to waste an hour of their day taking selfies, but then settle for dating the first guy who gives them any sort of attention.
If we were as picky with our men as we are our selfies, we’d spend a lot less time dating people who weren’t right for us. If you invest time in the beginning to ask the right questions and bring up the awkward topics that most people avoid, you’d find out a lot sooner if you were emotionally compatible with someone or not.
The truth is, we won’t post a photo without makeup on, but we’ll date a guy who doesn’t compliment us enough. We won’t post a photo with a hair out of place, but we’ll date a guy who doesn’t notice when we change our hair. We won’t post a photo if we don’t look our skinniest, but we’ll date a guy who makes us feel bad if we put on a few pounds.
As girls, it’s hard not to care what everyone else thinks, which is why we are so picky with our selfies. But guess what? Being picky with who you date means you are caring about yourself and that’s something we need to do more of.
If he’s not up to your standards when it comes to everything that’s important to you, delete him just as fast as a bad selfie on your camera roll. Your future self(ie) will definitely thank you!
